The Thwaites Glacier
Thwaites Glacier = Doomsday Glacier
A few data points:
The Thwaites Glacier has a size of 192’000 KM2. To put this figure into perspective: it’s larger than the size of Britain or of Florida.
The Glacier is losing ice at an increasing rate: the ice lost over the last 30 years has doubled.
Thwaites is losing annually about 50 billion tons of ice more than it is receiving in snowfall.
If Thwaites Glacier was to collapse entirely, global sea levels would increase by 65 cm.
NASA has discovered an underwater cavity underneath the glacier, with an area two-thirds the size of Manhattan in January 2019. The cavity formed mostly in only three years and is approximately 300 meters tall, likely speeding up the glacier's decay.
The above can be explained in one sentence:
the warming of the atmosphere, the ocean and their interaction with the glacier are driving the change.
The NZZ published this week a good video on the Thwaites Glacier. It’s worth a few minutes of your time. (Klimawandel: Warum ist der Thwaites-Gletscher so entscheidend? nzz.ch)
Nothing more to add.
