A calving study by NASA
Calving Study or Antarctica is crumbling
NASA just published new studies on the development of Antarctic ice. No doubt: the results are devastating.
Ice loss double the latest estimates
The ice-sheet has been shedding faster than assumed until now. So far, no surprise. Noticeable however is the fact that the
ice loss has been double
the latest estimates
Iceberg Calving
Antarctica is crumbling at its edges
says the lead scientist Chad Greene of the calving study.
Calving of icebergs is expected to increase even more. This means that the ice will not recover and that we can anticipate major “calving events” over the next 10 – 20 years. Notice that scientists have also introduced a new term: "calving" (we would say "kalbern" in German).
To then state the obvious: all of this will speed-up the global increase of sea levels.
The consequences of all of this do not require much phantasy or any substantial science. My humble opinion: I believe that
we have reached the point of no return.
Nevertheless,
I continue to believe in the force and intelligence of humanity and our ability to get our act together.
May be late, but hopefully not too late.
